About Us
The Utah Chapter of the National Afro-American Historical & Genealogical Society (AAHGS) was organized in 2006 and was privileged to host the national AAHGS Conference that year. We were formed, among other reasons, to help preserve the history and genealogy of African/Afro-American families of Utah both past and present.
Along with the National AAHGS mission to “promote scholarly research, provide resources for historical and genealogical studies, create a network of persons with similar interests, and assist members in documenting their family research and history,” we also strive to educate and facilitate, through special events, the basic skills of research and documentation.
We understand that genealogy is more than just collecting information, it is getting to know our family and ancestors as the people they really were, in the context of their lives and times.
We also have interest in the history of the African/Afro-American communities in Utah. One project we accomplished was the creation of a DVD titled “The Wisdom of Our Years,” featuring, through interviews and pictures, the lives and history of several Afro-American Utahns.
